The next line up to be revealed.....the Element of Frost!
Now, this is quite a unique one, one that I spent a lot of time doing research on and scratching my head as to what should be done.
Firstly, there isn't really a Frost Element. In many games, books and even comics, frost, ice and snow are often categorised as Water skills. However, there are already so many Water aligned creatures, I feel that it's a waste to actually just have one Element. As such the decision to have both Water and Frost was born.
Secondly, it is unique because in most mythology, there isn't a God that handles cold, ice or snow. The closest ones would be Khione, from Greek mythology, as her domain is that of snow and ice. Her father, Boreas, isn't really associated with ice or snow, but more directly linked to cold winds, or winter, which ultimately leads people to think of the cold or the chills. Other than that, we get none in Egyptian mythology. In Norse, we do have some Gods that are associated with cold, but they reigned over many other areas too! So it was really a tough time researching!
Thirdly, there are so many different Water aligned creatures, but few that are really associated with the cold or ice. As such, I had to crack my head and really tweak things here and there.
The list may actually surprise you guys; you may have comments both positive and negative, but I am willing to hear them all! So...here goes!
Class: Battle Mage
Creatures:
Frost Sprite
Akhlut
Viking
Frost Wyrm (not a dragon ^^)
Fenrir
Frost Elemental (Yuki-Onna)
Selkie
Valkyrie
Jotuun
Yeti
Aspidochelone
Nidhogg
Major Gods:
Artemis
Khonsu
Skadi
Minor Gods:
Khione
Selene
Iah
Hodr
From this list, you can see that firstly, an Aspidochelone and a Nidhogg isn't really a frosty creature. For the former, I was thinking, if we can have a giant turtle-island, why not a giant turtle-iceberg? As for a Nidhogg, he is often grouped together with dragons, breathing fire or noxious smog or what not. But he comes from Norse mythology, a world well known for it's cold, harsh environment, so why can't a Nidhogg breathe ice and frost instead, especially when there are so many different types of Dragons already? (even a Wyrm is considered a Drake or Dragon!)
The major change, and possibly a major challenge, for me however, was probably the Gods.
I made Khione a minor God and Artemis a major one, under Frost. You guys might complain. But I think it's befitting this way. Firstly, Artemis' brother represents the Sun, which is seen as either Light or Fire. Artemis' domain is the Moon or the Night, and as she's often seen as the opposite complement of Apollo, this means that she represents Dark or Cold (Frost). With YForce, Dark takes on the role of death, so we cannot have Artemis representing Dark. As such, those associated with the Moon (Khonsu, Selene, Iah) automatically are associated with Frost.
Secondly, in many areas, especially the deserts (Egyptian mythology), the nights are freezing cold. So hey, that would be Frost, isn't it?
Thirdly, if you look at the three Major Gods listed, what is the direct link you will notice? That they are hunters, slayers. Cold, merciless, silent? Those are the perfect traits for the Element of Frost.
So, what do you guys think?
Do feel free to give me your comments on everything listed here, be it creatures, Gods or even the Class! I would really love to hear from you!
Lastly, tell me which Element's line up you would want to find out next! I may just reveal the one you guys choose! :)
